Fashion Focus 2013: A Cheat Sheet to the Six Must-See Runway Shows During Chicago’s Fashion Week

The highly anticipated Fashion Focus: Chicago’s Fashion Week  is back for its ninth year  October 15, and the city has organized a variety of runway shows, presentations and shopping events in celebration of Chicago’s buzzing fashion scene.  Once again, Millennium Park Chase Promenade North  will serve as the main venue of the headlining runway shows, but a slew of presentations, parties and shopping events will take place all over town. Here’re the six runway shows we are excited to see this year and you need to check out, day by day. You can of course find  a complete list of events on the Fashion Focus website.

 

What: Designer and Muse

When: Tuesday, October 15 at 6 pm

Where: TBD

The runway event is hosted by the City of Chicago and Michigan Avenue Magazine and it is the official kick off of Fashion Focus.  It will partner local celebrities in music, culinary, film, theater and dance with a designer who will create a look for his or her “muse” to be showcased throughout the evening. Pairings will include: Maria Pinto and Jeanne Gang (architecture), Azeeaz Kahn and Alpana Singh (culinary),Shernett Swaby and Mindy Segal (culinary), Diego Rocha and Naomi Beckwith (visual arts) among others. The event is invitation-only for guests of Michigan Avenue Magazine; however there will be an opportunity for the general public to obtain a limited number of tickets via Fashion Focus Chicago social media (Facebook and Twitter: @FashionFocus) beginning October 1.

 

What: Maison De LaCour Fashion Presentation

When: Wednesday, October 16 at noon

Where: Millennium Park Chase Promenade North

We are particularly excited to see the presentation of designer Julius LaCour, who will showcase his Spring 2014 collection  entitled “The Stars Are Out Tonight.”  It is designed to evoke the ‘joie de vivre’ of the Studio 54 1970s, anchored by the influences, color waves and prints of Moroccan culture. What: Taking it to the Streets
When: Wednesday, October 16 at 7:30pm
Where: Millennium Park Chase Promenade North
If you remember from previous years, Macy’s always had a runway show featuring the designers in residence of the Fashion Incubator program. This year, this are a bit different. The event features Sarah Stevenson from the Toronto Fashion Incubator and Christine Phung from the Atelier de Paris, an Incubator program in Paris, in addition to Chicago designers   Lagi Nadeau, Shelby Steiner, Agnes Hamerlik, Randall Hill, Laura Takataka,Nicole Puszynski, J. What: NEXT Fashion Chicago 2013

When: Thursday, October 17, 6-10pm (8pm fashion presentation)

Where: Germania Place, 108 W. Germania

This full-scale theatrical runway presentation features Chicago designers Tamra Ellingson, St. Frimpong, Elena Bobysheva, Sarah Church, Gary Gonzalez, Meekis, Cleons Clothing Co., Mira Couture, Bottega Contessa and Niala Conte.  Expect the NEXT GENERATION Fashion Design Challenge—a special presentation during the show introducing the freshest, emerging design talent. Both before and after the fashion presentation guests can meet and shop the collections of all out featured designers. Event emcees will include: Daniella Guzman, Morning News Anchor-NBC 5 Chicago, Alicia Roman, Meteorologist-NBC 5 Chicago and Special Award Presentation by: Corri McFadden, Owner, Edrop-off Luxury Consignment. General Admission-$45, Student-$25, VIP-$95.  Tickets can be purchased at: www.nextfashionchicago.com.

 

What: Urban Shapeshifters

When: Thursday, October 17, 7:30 pm

Where: Millennium Park Chase Promenade North

This is the first menswear-only event presented at Fashion Focus and  will feature local, national and international menswear designers including J. Cheikh,  Michelle Tan, and Jack Cave from Chicago, Brandon Scott, Los Angeles and Rana Rojo, Miami. In partnership with Chicago’s Gallery Aesthete, international designers participating are: Boris Bidjan Saberi, Barcelona; Ann Demeulemeester, Antwerp and Comme de Garçons, Tokyo and Paris. What: The Art of Fashion 

When: Friday, October 18, 6pm VIP Reception/7:30 pm Runway Show

Where: Millennium Park Chase Promenade North

Stylechicago.com’s popular show will feature ten spring 2014 looks from ten Chicago-based designers Maria Pinto, Calvin Tran, Eva Pazola, Boris Powell, Lily & Migs, Michelle Tan, Hector-Javier MonArrez, Shalini Sharma and Shernett Swaby.
