Fall Fashion 2021: The Ultimate Guide to This Season’s Trends

fall fashion 2021

Believe it or not, fall is officially here, and inasmuch as we are still enjoying wonderfully warm temperatures, cooler weather will be here before we know it. And with that, a completely new season of trends to check out and shop for.

From an unexpected color of the season to cozy knits and head scarves, let let’s talk fall fashion 2021, shall we?

Lavender

A most unexpected fall fashion color, lavender sept the runways in the U.S. and Europe alike. Designers like Chanel, Givenchy, Miu Miu, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jil Sander, and Marine Serre are some of the many designers who sent the unexpected fall color down the runway, adding a pastel freshness to classic autumnal pieces like cozy knits, puffers, and tailored coats. Lavender is one our favorite fall fashion 2021 trends.

Preppy Chic

Preppy isn’t just for school anymore (or Ralph Lauren!)  Preppy has become mainstream. Popped collars, sweater vests, cardigans, pleats, and various plaid prints are in for fall and quite frankly we cannot get enough. Designers like Vivienne Westwood, Bora Aksu, Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini decidedly said that the preppy trend wasn’t going anywhere and was in fact, reinforced with fresher takes on what can be interpreted as unoriginal and boring.

Après-Ski

Even if you are not headed for a weekend in Aspen or Gstaad, you will still love this fall fashion 2021 trend. Warm, bulky sweaters — cropped or oversized — will keep you cozy in the colder days of late fall and winter. And if you ask designers at Miu Miu, Chanel, Balenciaga, and Junya Watanabe ski sweater life is where it’s at come fall.

Lozenge Motifs

Inasmuch as the definition of the lozenge motif can be somewhat undefined in terms of the size of the rhombuses, designers splattered the refreshing shape onto ball gowns, coats, tights, and track suits.  Our favorite iteration is the Dior gown.

Sparkle

Layers of sequins flooded the fall 2021 runways making the sparkling trend a prominent one for the new season. But sequins did not come in the form of your regular party dress. In fact,  long trousers, high necks, jackets, and voluminous dresses were all covered by shine and designers like Prada, Alberta Ferretti, Dries Van Noten, Paco Rabanne, Valentino, Loewe, and more skipped the minimalism in favor of something optimistic and grand.

Total Knit

If we learned anything about fashion from the dreadful 2020 it is the fact that we will choose comfort — every time. And designers listened. The total knit fall trend is cosy yet sophisticated, especially from the likes of Gabriela Hearst, Fendi, Proneza Schouler and Acne Studio. And you know the best part? Knits flatter virtually every shape.

Headscarf

Babushka headscarves is another unexpected trend for fall, but here we are. My Bulgarian grandmother wore a babushka; so does the Queen of England. But seeing the headscarf on the runways of Dior, Max Mara, Versace, Roksanda and Preen? Sure, why not? At least your hair will be kept in place. In all seriousness, the babushka trend signals that classic and sober fashion will resonate with a world that has been through a global trauma.  After all, the headscarf tied under the chin links back to eras far more grounded and less frivolous than pre-COVID Western world.

The Fall Bag

It’s time to retire the mini bags that have been so prominent all spring and summer. After all, they can barely fit a lipstick, let alone your phone or anything else really. Thankfully, big bags are back for fall and you know what, the bigger the better.
