NYFW Runway Report: Oday Shakar Spring 2017
The Oday Shakar Spring 2017 collection was unsurprisingly filled with flow-y dresses and gowns meant for the red carpet. After all, we’ve seen his creation worn by starlets for a while now. But this was the Iraqi designer’s debut at New York Fashion Week and quite an anticipatory one.
He did live up to the hype. Shakar grew up in SoCal but travelled back to native Baghdad to connect to his heritage, and the elegance and beauty of both cultures are quite evident in his work. Sandy beige kaftan gowns in ethereal fabrics, and silk blouses proved to work perfectly as they glided effortlessly down the runway.
Fabric is definitely Shakar’s strong suite, while accessories like belts were used in places that made the clothes less appealing.
