5 Ways to Wear Velvet (and How to Avoid Looking Over the Top)
Nothing says luxury like velvet, the historic fabric of the aristocracy. Luckily for all of us plebs, velvet is a major trend this season and we get to put it on and play fancy.
Whether done as ankle boots, slip dresses, handbags, blazers, trousers and powers suits, the rich fabric is literally on everything and everywhere. Designers also opted to bring velvets in every grand shade of fine jewels — the deep purples at Bottega Veneta, dark greens at Rochas, dusty rose at Alberta Ferretti are some of our  favorites.
So how do you translate the velvet trend 2016 into your own wardrobe?
How about a lush maxi velvet dress? Opt in for a jeweled color for maximum effect, and don’t shy away from textured accessories, like a patent boot or a fur scarf. After all, fall is all about mixing good textures.
If an all velvet dress is not your thing, why don’t you try a velvet blazer? Its rich fabric would offset a pair of jeans brilliantly, and don’t forget to bring your attitude 😉
Of course, there’s always an all-velvet pantsuit (paging HRC!) you can rock at work and after hours. The choker/ suit combo below is quite fetching, no?
If you are not into wearing velvet head-to-toe, why don’t you try a velvet sweater. In fact, this might be our favorite option, especially paired with the fringy, textured skirt and slip-on shoes.
And if none of these options work for you, perhaps you will choose to wear velvet on your feet. There are plenty of incredible velvet shoes currently on the market, but we will always and forever opt in for a pair of red velvet booties. Take a cue from Gigi below.
Now that you know how to wear the velvet trend without looking over the top, it’s time to do some shopping! And tell us, what do you think about the velvet trend. Is it too much? Not enough? Chime in the comments!
