What to Wear This Season: Fall 2022 Edition

fall trends 2022

And just like that we are back talking trends. Fall trends 2022 that is. Back in February (!) the fall runways roared back bursting with creativity.  Designers went back to basics, many showed intellectual and beautiful clothes; leather got a major overhaul; and of course we cannot have fall fashion without sequins, shimmer and glam.

Let’s dive into it all. Here are the top fall trends 2022 to prep you about what’s on the horizon for the new season.

Back to basics

Yes, we are going back to basics as designers like Jil Sander, Bottega Veneta and Gabriela Hearst adopted a minimalistic approach to dressing for the new season. Think investment pieces like crisp button-downs, sharp blazers and classic styles. This fall trend 2022 is certain to be present in one’s closet for a long time.

Heavy-duty leather

Leather for fall? Groundbreaking, I know. But the new season’s leather has nothing to do with the soft, dainty, buttery looking leather of recent memory. Rather, designers opted-in for edgy, heavy-duty, thicker, and worn-in materials. Some favorites come from Alexander McQueen, Miu Miu, ACNE Studios, and Diesel.

Sequins, shimmer and glam

If you are in need of fashion inspiration for the holiday season, you are in luck. Sequins, shimmer and sheen was a major theme on the fall runways with glamorous sequined mermaid scales at Altuzarra, slip dresses with layers of lace and sequins at Bottega Veneta, and gorgeous beading across full skirts at Carolina Herrera.

Puffed-up bombers

Bomber jackets are back and probably the major topper to know about for fall 2022. From the oversized leather bomber at Louis Vuitton, the super-puffy versions at Loewe, to Prada’s  bold embellishments and Sacai’s stunning hues, take a note of the new version of the good, old bomber.

Quintessential American

A white-shirt-and-jeans-combo is probably the most quintessential American uniform and many designers leaned into it. Some of the most noteworthy iterations came from  Givenchy and their pearl-beaded jeans paired with a simple white shirt; Balmain’s slouchy jean-sculpural-white-shirt-mix, and Brandon Maxwell’s classic combination.

Hot pink

If you want to wear the it color of the new fall season look no further than hot pink. It is quire refreshing to see the bright hue on the fall runways. After all, Valentino dedicated 47  out of 81 total looks of its Fall collection to hot, pink, monochrome ensembles. Quite spectacular. Elsewhere, hot pink popped at Versace and Chanel and we loved every minute of it.

Sweeping lengths

Inasmuch as minis were a huge trend in spring/summer (who remembers this combo from Miu Miu?) designers looked into floor sweeping lengths for fall. I am loving Proenza Schouler’s city smart version, the weighty knits at Alberta Ferretti and the slinky silhouettes at Saint Laurent.

Over-the-knee boots

After several years of absence on the trends scene, over-the-knee boots are back one of the staple fall trends 2022. From the wide-legged waders at Chanel, Dion Lee, and Alaïa, the block heels at Isabel Marant, to the sleek version at Victoria Beckham, there’s a pair for everyone’s liking.

What fall trend tickles your fancy?
