Top New York Fashion Week Looks Spring 2017

Another New York Fashion Week has come and gone, and as we look across the Pond for what’s new in SS17, let’s recap what happened on the runways in New York. After all, the Big Apple had some big collections, some bad collections and quite a few forgettable collections.

So let’s dive right into it, shall we?

Who won the runway?

Thank God for Proenza Schouler, Thom Browne, Delpozo and Rodarte, who were without a doubt the highlight of NYFW. The Proenza boys schooled us on bright knits, how to work ostrich feathers into your wardrobe without looking like a fool, and how to appropriately pair a funky skirt with a proper blazer.

Thom Browne’s vision for Spring was weird, whimsical and spectacular starting with the venue — a basement gallery somewhere in Soho, which he turned into an emptied swimming pool. And then the Stepford Wives strutted their stuff in bright dresses, checkered blazers and hats that looked like swimming caps. Loved. it. all.

As you know Delpozo always delivers. The craftsmanship, details and attention to volume are like no other (after all the brand’s chief creative director Josep Font had training in architecture prior.)  Fashion critics call it pret-a-couture, we call it simply spectacular.

And over at Rodarte, the Mulleavy sisters made a collection inspired by the bees. But don’t think for a second that they took their inspiration literally. Bees had a subtle impact – like honeycomb-ish layering of lace and dotted tulle, or safety pins lined up along trouser legs, their pins like so many stingers. Brilliant, really.

We also cannot pass to mention the killer Spring 2017 collection of one of our favorite indy designers – GEORGINE. The young brand’s grunge-y, badass collection was inspired from the way that young women always pilfer the closets of their mothers, and how they would wear more classic pieces, but with their own twist put on it. Solid and cohesive. Oh and PS, the beauty look was amazing too.

Who failed fashion?

So who was a total bust this NYFW? Everyone else, haa! Jk. But many were. Prabal Gurung comes to mind, who is still trying to find his niche again. Same goes for Oscar de la Renta and DKNY. Both brands are in transition, the former about to have a new creative director team, and the latter trying to distinguish itself from Public School.

Trends

Trends-wise, thing could have been a bit more dynamic since old trends are new again. Liquid metallics and stripes will be big in Spring, and so will the color red. But perhaps the most interesting trend out of NYC is the return of neon, which popped on the runways of Alex Wang and Jason Wu.  Oh, and get ready to bring out your mom’s enormous earrings next season — they are trending.
