We all know that the haute couture collections are the pinnacle of the fashion industry, representing the ultimate in luxury and exclusivity. The term “haute couture” comes from the French language, and literally means “high sewing” or “high dressmaking.”

The the couture spring 2023 shows proved the concept yet again, if not more. Two particularly breathtaking shows couture 2023 shows were Schiapaprelli and Haider Ackerman for Jean Paul Gaultier.  Daniel Roseberry caused a stir on the internet with his faux Schiaparelli taxidermy that featured a leopard leaping from Shalom Harlow’s chest, a wolf staring from Naomi Campbell’s coat, and lion heads adorning Irina Shayk on the runway and Kylie Jenner in the front row.

Haider Ackermann’s show, set against an ice-blue carpet beneath the roof of Jean Paul Gaultier’s house, was a mesmerizing display of high design values. The models demonstrated a collective intelligence in their interpretation of the collection, while Gaultier’s skilled ateliers brought the vision to life through body-sharp tailoring and crisply-scissored drapery. The result was a cohesive and breathtaking presentation.

Elie Saab also had a strong couture show, probably our favorite in recent years. Each gown was a stunning tour de force, showcasing magnificent embroideries, appliqués, passementeries, and a variety of embellishments. Elaborate tight-fitted mermaid dresses in shades of aqua, delicate pink, and cerulean blue were lavished with crystals and pearls, creating a truly dazzling effect.

And then there was the Viktor & Rolf show: One daring model was wearing her ball gown upside down. The stunning yet unconventional look featured an inverted 3-D printed bodice and layers of tightly sewn powder-blue tulle that completely obscured her vision. To navigate the runway, she was guided by instructions delivered over an earpiece. Meanwhile, other models donned pretty pastel creations that appeared slightly askew, held by a frame on an angle just off their bodies. Pretty spectacular.

Perhaps the most “boring” couture spring 2023 show was Chanel. The short, flared suits with the odd top hat and bow tie did not seem high fashion enough, or at least worth a couture label. It seems that Valerie Viard is still trying to fill the rather large shoes of the late Karl Lagerfeld.
