The Met Gala is baaaack!

It was not the first Monday in May but rather the second Monday in September and right after New York Fashion Week, but, after a two-year COVID hiatus the Met Gala was officially back last night. Back with a vengeance!

Before we dive in all the fashion, let me prime you: The Met Gala 2021 theme was “American Independence,” which left attendees with a wide range of interpretations. We saw homage to the Wide Wide West (we are looking at you, JLo and Pharell!); there were a literal iterations of the red, white and blue (hi Debbie Harry!); stars were inspired by old Hollywood glamour (like Kendall Jenner paying homage to Audrey Hepburn); there were bold political statements (you all saw the Tax the Rich dress worn by AOC, right?) and many more interpretations of the theme.

But the point of the Met Gala and the exhibit is not to interpret the theme literally, but rather to show how far American fashion has come. The show features over 70 percent emerging designers of diverse backgrounds, but allow me to quote the curator of the Met’s Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton, who put it best back in April, “I’ve been really impressed by American designers’ responses to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, and I’m just finding their work very, very self-reflective,” he said. “I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a renaissance.”
